There was a loud thunder that jolted Vincent from sleep. He felt as if someone whipped him through the thunder. Then, he heard the footsteps of his stepdaughter, Andrea, in the corridor outside his bedroom. She knocked at his door loudly with insistence.

“Vincent?” she called.

He could sense panic in her voice.

“Andrea, come on in,” he said as he sat up on the bed.

She pushed the door open but stayed at the doorway. Andrea was wearing a ratty t-shirt with her usual sweatpants that had become her pajamas. She let her long black hair tangling. Her eyes looked swollen as if she was crying. Vincent felt compassion for his stepdaughter deep into his heart.

Andrea was set to graduate in a month and celebrated her birthday a few months ago. Since he met her a few years ago, the young woman had always been exasperatingly headstrong, fearless, and even reckless but he was unable to recognize Andrea in the young woman who was standing in front of him in the middle of the night. Andrea looked really thin, too frail with her eyes haunted and large.

“The thunder,” she said as she winced when a flash of light illuminated his dark bedroom.

“Yeah, I know,” he replied as he looked at the window.

“I have locked it,” he said.

“Are you all right?” he asked as he turned back to her.

The young woman began nodding but tears covered her face. Vincent threw the covers back and rushed to her. He did not think about grabbing his robe even if he felt exposed in just his briefs. However, the sight of his stepdaughter crying alarmed him so much that he was ready to do anything to calm her.

Life had not been easy for the both of them since last year when Andrea’s mother died suddenly from a tragic accident. Liz was Vincent’s second wife but his only genuine love.

They had been a close and happy family for three years with Andrea who accepted him grudgingly as her stepfather. Since he did not have any children of his own, Vincent did not attempt to discipline Andrea. He left it to her mother and whenever there were spats between Andrea and Liz, Vincent stayed out of these.

Now that Liz was not there anymore, he felt really helpless as he did not know how to handle his stepdaughter. He cared deeply for her and desired to see her become a successful young woman now that she was mature.

However, Andrea was used to having her mother at her side as an anchor but now she felt as if she was drifting away. Her life became full of uncertainties. Vincent figured that the best thing he could do was to give Andrea some space. He was also grieving and he still had to run his accounting firm that took him most of his time since he had bills to pay and maintained a roof above their heads.

He slipped an arm around Andrea’s shoulder and the young woman did not pull away.
